Dogs are good companions, and when in rural areas is time well spent in nature keeping you fit, both physically and mentally. Also, a great way to meet the locals, interact and support the local community. By using authentic independent businesses, you are creating a positive impact.
Rural areas are for those who are travelling in a campervan, have their own vehicle, or the use of one when they arrive. Or you will have to look for ways that can make it possible. Discussing with the host what are the possible options that are available, with your arrival and departing. There are many house sitting jobs, who have cats, or as well as dogs in towns and cities. That may better suit those travelling short time or who are travelling by airplane, and a combination of train or buses.
House sitting is also suited to someone looking to take Mini-Retirements. Those who are semi-retired, retired, taking a gap year or a career break. Plus, anyone in a position to take extended time away. Like digital nomads, who can work while away in the comfort of a home.
Looking after the house, taking care of the small jobs and knowing the dogs are happy. There is an exchange take place, for a roof over your head, a place to cook, and to relax.
Meeting the host before they head off, is a good idea and is normal practice when possible. Makes a good connection building trust to both parties, and staying in contact via WhatsApp makes it a win-win combination, and with a feeling of peace.
Most hosts will make a list of what to do in an emergency, instructions, and contact numbers. Plus, any special requirements for each pet. It’s not unusual to have a cleaner visit once or twice a week, all the details will be listed. Review, ask any questions and take a photo of the details and save to your mobile.
Always do a good job, above and beyond. Treating the house as your own and respecting the property, by being grateful for the opportunity. Leaving the house clean, and tidy for the host on their return is moving on with a good feeling.

Beatriz and Martin were fabulous house/pet sitters. They are both relaxed and thoughtful people who are also very self sufficient and organised. Communication with Beatriz before and during the stay was very good and Beatriz (and Martin) are very good at asking questions to clarify things. We would welcome Beatriz and Martin back into our home at anytime - Gex France.
